From Sussex to Wakhan - A Doctor in the Hindu Kush - BBC Radio Documentary - cheops

Alastair Leithead ventures into the Hindu Kush mountains to the Wakhan Corridor, a forgotten but peaceful corner of Afghanistan, to meet a British doctor and his family who are helping some of the poorest people on earth.

Alex Duncan is making house calls in his village. But the doctor isn`t dealing with the usual complaints about aching joints and colds.
Instead he`s saving the lives of some of the world`s poorest people in one of its most remote corners.

Englishman Alex and his wife Eleanor have given up everything to move to the mountainous Wakhan Corridor in northern Afghanistan with their four young children. They have left behind a comfortable family home in Sussex to live in a single-room mud hut high in a freezing valley.

All six of them sleep, cook, eat and bathe in the room. There is no central heating, no toilet and no running water. And rather than a sixfigure GP`s salary, Alex and Eleanor work for nothing. All they get is £50 a month to pay their rent plus just enough to buy food and clothes.

Alex, 42, says: `When we first told our family and friends we were moving to Afghanistan with the kids four years ago they were a bit shocked to say the least.`

`If I was sat in my surgery in Sussex I`d still be helping people, but here we`re making a real difference and saving lives.`

Alex, who studied medicine at Cambridge University, is doctor to the 10,000 Wakhi tribespeople who live high in the valley in the Hindu Kush mountains between Tajikistan to the north and Pakistan to the south...
