The Battle of Stalingrad, which lasted 200 days, was a major turning point in World War II and is considered the bloodiest battle in recorded human history.



By late 1942 the Germans had invaded deep into the Russian interior, their objective was to obtain the vast oilfields of the Caucasus. The last obstacle that remained in their way of reaching the oilfields was the city of Stalingrad.



Far from being the final step in the conquest of the USSR, Stalingrad proved a bloodbath.



Half a million Germans were killed and almost three times as many Russians lost their lives. Total casualties are estimated to be over two million.
