This decision did not come easily to him, and the "Hula Blues" project, which marked Mahals first return to his home of so many years, serves as testimony.

Taj Mahal has always been fascinated and moved by Hawaiian Music. 58 year old Mahal recalls that even as a child he felt draw to the hawaiian sounds. During his years on Kauai he was able to immerse himself in the music, make contact and strike up friendships with hawaiian musicians, for whom making music is an inseparable aspect of social life: a fertile breeding ground for the "Hula Blues" project, which took on form at a much later stage, as a "homecoming party" with old friends, so to speak. "

I'd bought a couple of Taj Mahals' albums,( you know,the usual "best of" ),while I was browsing the blues section in the record store.I'd always been a blues fan and wondered what he was like...Straight away I was hooked.I acquired some more,including his collaboration with Toumani Diabete,and discovered his ability to fuse Blues with just about any other genre of music.So it was with glorious anticipation I listened to "Sacred Island". I wasn't disappointed.His amalgamation of musical styles gloriously continues in this album.It is seriously one of the best cds' I've listened to for a while...especially Track 4,"Betty and Dupree". If you like your music totally laid back, but with that edge that keeps your headphones glued to your ears, then buy this.It won't let you down. ~ "fatviking"
