Windows XP Professional x64 SP2 Corporate Edition 64 bit OS - LIGHT EDITION - (www.softzone.org)
- A FULL Windows XP Pro x64 Corporate Edition is avaiable at
Yet another nLite customized Windows XP Pro x64 made from a Professional Corporate edition to skip activartion.
I'm getting better at nlite-tweaking. This is by far my best WinXP 64 stripdown so far, it's both fast and stable, it supports most hardware but it's stripped down so hard that not much of the "corporate" from "Corporate Edition" is left.
In fact, this OS would cause some disappointment if used in a corporate environment. On the other hand, it will fit most home users, and in particular those who think that Windows is much heavier than it needs to be, and of course, those (like me) who only use Windows to play games.
You can swicth keyboard layouts, it supports a maximum of 150 half-open connections instead of the regular 10, it can be installed from within an existing Windows installation - but the iso image is less than half the size of a regular Windows and the installed OS takes around 1.2 GB on HDD and ~100MB in RAM.
Here's a list of features (far from complete):
- Aggressively stripped down WinXP Pro 64 Edition with integrated SP2, English (US) language interface
- Classic theme ONLY (you can still change colors, but no "XP Looks")
- Supports most hardware.
- "Almost Completely Unattended Install": You will be prompted for your keyboard layout, timezone and locale, i.e. stuff like date and time format, measurement systems, etc. the interface is only English.
- WARNING: during the installtion process, and more exactly while 'performing final tasks', the installer will pop up an error message where it complains about some failed operation caused by file not found: DON'T PANIC ( and think '42'). Just click OK and go on, the OS will work perfectly.
- Default user's and Administrator's passwords are found in a file called PASSWORDS.txt in the root direcotry of the CD => CHANGE THEM!!! <= don't keep those passwords.
- The key code is stored in a file called KEY.txt, also in the CD's root direcotry (you probably won't need it... but you never know)
- FIRST THING AFTER INSTALLING: DEFRAGMENT C: It gets badly fragmented during install (yet another confirming fact: Windows sucks).
- Support for most hardware has been kept but there are no drivers included, except for the default ones (generic): you want to get the drivers for your hardware before you install (try hXXp:// www -dot- <hardwaremanucaturer> -dot- com where <hardwaremanufacturer> is the manufacturer of yur driver, e.g. asus, nvidia, intel, etc)
- Services that haven't been removed are set to the same default as they were in the original Windows: if you know what you're doing it'll take you five minutes to stop and disable what you don't need, and at the same time non-geeks will get their stuff working without problems. Or more exactly, with one problem less.
- No Internet Explorer. Get Firefox, Opera or anything, and do that before you install. IE core has been kept because it's needed for some other stuff, like for instance reading help files (BTW, all the windows guide is gone)
- No annoying pop-uip messages like 'your PC may be exposed to risks', or 'too low disk space'
- Ability to install from within an existing Windows installation has been kept, but I don't know whther upgrading would work. Fresh installing surely will.
- Recycle bin and My computer are the only visible icones, and you can even delete them if you want: I have it that way, looks much leaner: I use only quick launch shortcuts for everything, including my computer and recycle bin. Just drag and drop them to the taskbar before you delete tem from the desktop (you need to enable 'show quick launch' and disbale 'lock taskbar')
- When deleting files, they are not moved to Recycle bin but deleted dirtetly (you can change that in Recycle bin's properties)
- Autorun is disabled by default. You have to click on the CD icon to start it, simply putting the disk in the tray won't do. As for all UI tweaks, I did that because I like it that way, but most of these changes can be reverted.
- Default view is now "list" (you can easily change that)
- Max half-open connections number increased from the default 10 to 15
