The Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer provides a standalone method to remotely scan machines to identify missing security updates and common security misconfigurations.

Overview
In response to direct customer feedback for a standalone security update and vulnerability assessment tool to identify common security misconfigurations, Microsoft continues to provide the latest version of the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) tool. Version 2.x is unified with Microsoft Update and WSUS technologies to provide consistent results with Microsoft Update and to dynamically support new products. MBSA includes a graphical and command line interface that can perform local or remote scans of Windows systems.

MBSA runs on Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, and Windows XP systems and will scan for common security (VA) misconfigurations in the following products: Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0, SQL Server 7.0 and 2000, Internet Explorer (IE) 5.01 and later, and Office 2000, 2002 and 2003.

MBSA 2.x also scans for missing security updates for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, IIS, the latest versions of SQL Server, Exchange, Internet Explorer and all versions of Windows Media Player.
