Jon McClure, previously best known as one of Alex Turner's
best mates, has suddenly been making a bit of a name for
himself. Previous single Heavyweight Champion Of The World
was a superior indie-pop anthem, and this single looks set
to be absolutely huge.
McClure's increasingly hilarious interviews usually
feature him saying how much of a genius he is, so it's a
good job that the music stands up. He Said He Loved Me is
an infectious male/female duet which tells the tale of a
heartbroken teenager who's been dumped by an older man.
Observational lyrics sung in a regional accent ("he got
off with Keeley, she thinks she's special" spits out the
chorus) may be all the rage, but the Reverend adds
something very fresh to the mix. Some may find it
irritating, but most people will be flocking to worship at
this particular Reverend's pulpit.
