Zero no Tsukaima began as a series of light novels written by Noboru Yamaguchi and illustrated by Eiji Usatsuka. The first volume was published in Japan on June 25, 2004, and as of August 2007, twelve bound volumes have been published by Media Factory. The first light novel volume of a side story written and illustrated by the same people as with Zero no Tsukaima known as Tabatha no Bouken was released on October 25, 2006 (from Wikipedia).
