Mein 4:00rn2. Cherry Waves (Acoustic) 5:06rnrnrnLong after their \'nu-metal\' contemporaries have bitten therndust, Deftones still show no signs of floundering. Thernfact that the near-perfect White Pony was released aroundrnthe same time as Korn\'s Issues and Limp Bizkit\'s ChocolaternStarfish, says it all really.rnrnYet the Sacramento outfit looked in danger of losing thisrncredibility, as their self-titled fourth album veeredrndangerously back to the adolescent screamo thatrncharacterised their breakthrough years. Thankfully, newrnsingle Mein, taken from the undervalued Saturday NightrnWrist, shows this to have been no more than a blip.rnrnDominated by lush production techniques, the influence ofrnPink Floyd\'s Bob Ezrin and Far\'s Shaun Lopez shinernthrough, with supersonic fills combining fluidly with therncrushing riffery that has always been the epitome of thernband\'s sound. Complex time changes and Chino Moreno\'srnbreathy vocal complete a gigantic sound that steadilyrnthuds out its melodic force.rnrnThe defining moment of the track, however, is the sultryrnchorus sung by System Of A Down\'s Serj Tankian. ThernArmenian-American\'s deep, rumbling vocal contrastsrnperfectly with a soaring body of down-tuned guitar work.rnWith more interesting link-up between verse and chorus, rnthis would have been a collaboration to rival the MaynardrnJames Keenan-led Passenger. As it is, it remains a potentrnreminder that Deftones are still very much a force to bernreckoned with.
