IMDB reviewer: "I first heard of this movie after seeing \'Return to Paradise.\' Both are about an American getting caught in a foreign country with hashish and the trials and tribulations that ensue. The similarities stop there, however. For one, this is based on a true story, unlike Return to Paradise. That makes it even more heartwrenching/suspenseful/terrifying when you know that the brutality you see really happened. The acting is first rate, especially by Brad Davis, the main character. Pretty much everything is first rate: the score, art direction, etc. Furthermore, there is no wasted film. Almost every scene moves the story along in some way. There are many symbolisms and metaphors that you have to watch for. This is a rare breed of movie where you actually care about the characters. Like Roger Ebert said, some movies transport you out of your body and into the screen. You forget you are watching a movie and you are totally involved. This is one of those movies. You become Billy Hayes. You feel his pain, his hope, his hate, his alienation, his loneliness, and his longing for freedom."
