Harry Potter is having a tough time with his relatives (yet again). He runs away after using magic to blow Uncle Vernon's sister Marge who was being offensive towards Harry's parents. Initially scared for using magic outside the school, he is pleasantly surprised that he won't be penalized after all. However, he soon learns that a dangerous criminal and Voldemort's trusted aide Sirius Black has escaped from the Azkaban prison and wants to kill Harry to avenge the Dark Lord. To worsen the conditions for Harry, vile shape-shifters called Dementors are appointed to guard the school gates and inexplicably happen to have the most horrible effect on him. Little does Harry know that by the end of this year, many holes in his past (whatever he knows of it) will be filled up and he will have a clearer vision of what the future has in store...

Harry Potter torna a Hogwarts e si riunisce agli amici Ron Weasley e Hermione Granger, che si comporta in modo strano. Hagrid è diventato un insegnante mentre il nuovo professore di Difesa è Remus Lupin. Harry è spaventato perchè ha scoperto che Sirius Black, che tradì suoi genitori, è fuggito da Azkaban e sta venendo alla scuola di magia, probabilmente per finire il lavoro e uccidere lo stesso Harry. Inolte il ragazzo è preso di mira dai Dissenatori, le guardie carcerarie di Azkaban che dovrebbero proteggere la scuola ma creano solo problemi. Dal canto suo, Hagrad rischia il licenziamento quando una delle sue creatore, Fierobecco, aggredisce Draco Malfoy. Seguendo Peter Minus, seguace di Lord Voldemort, Harry, Ron e Hermione scoprono Lupin si trasforma in lupo, che conosce Sirius e la verità su di lui. I genitori di Harry furono infatti traditi da Minus. Lupin viene gravemente ferito nel tentativo di salvare Sirius, ferito a sua volta assieme a Ron. Quando tutto sembra mettersi male, Silente suggerisce Hermione di usare il suo giratempo con la quale riesce a frequentare più lezioni contemporaneamente. Tutti vengono salvati, compresi Hagrid e Fierobecco (che fugge con Sirius). Lupin da le dimissioni.
