For the production of the album, Rihanna worked with Evan Rogers, Carl Sturken, Stargate and J. R. Rotem with label-mate Ne-Yo who wrote the albums second single. Housing a combination of Pop, reggae and ballad elements, the album was released with mixed reviews.

The album features the hit singles "SOS", "Unfaithful" and "Break It Off", the first of which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The album peaked at number five on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart and on the UK Albums Chart. The album has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
