Kate decide di fermarsi, per aspettare il ritorno del marito, ma, visto il trascorrere infruttuoso del tempo, anche Luke parte per la Virginia alla ricerca del padre. Qui viene arruolato dai nordisti con la forza e combatte nelle storica battaglia di Shiloh, sino a quando si trova ferito in un accampamento, accanto a un uomo morente: suo padre. Disgustato dalla guerra, diserta, ruba un cavallo sparando a uno sceriffo e fugge verso il resto della famiglia Macahan. I Macahan si troveranno coinvolti nell'epopea della corsa all'Ovest, immersi nei conflitti con gli indiani e con la natura a volte ostile, tanto che anche Kate morrà e arriverà sua sorella Molly (giovane vedova) a aiutare i nipoti. In sostanza la storia di questa famiglia di pionieri nel West di fine '800.
