In his film he needed a dog as a co-star, so he tried a dachshund, a Pomeranian, a poodle, a Boston bull terrier and an English bulldog. None of them had what he needed. He needed a mongrel, and finally found a mongrel bitch namned Mutt as Scrap. She was picked up by Charlie toghether with 20 other dogs at the Los Angeles pound. After the filming she was adopted by Charlie as his pet.
This film is a masterpiece of comedy, widely recognized as one of Charlie chaplins very best.
It was also the first film made by his new company First National Films, and Charlie Chaplin's first film to make a million dollar.
