English singer-songwriter David Gray recorded his fourth album, White Ladder, at home in 1998 and self-released it after three previous albums garnered critical acclaim and little else. Opening for the likes of Dave Matthews and Radiohead helped up his profile and led to Matthews choosing White Ladder as the U.S. debut for his new ATO label. It's not difficult to hear what attracted Matthews to Gray. There's a strong dose of romantic wanderlust to these tunes. "This Year's Love," with its somber piano notes, captures the drifter feel of earlier Gray work (such as the remarkable "A Gathering of Dust" from his debut)."Sail Away" is "Dock of the Bay" from another side of the shore. Gray clearly loves words, and the way he emphasizes them--spitting them out in contempt one minute, soulfully stretching a note out at other moments--lends his music drama. It's no wonder he's been compared to so heavy an improviser as Van Morrison. There's a spiritual connection there that this strong release makes only more obvious. -Rob O'Connor

David Gray's glorious fourth record explodes in a wellspring of spacious, electronica-tinged folk-pop. He uses his bright growl of a voice to memorable effect, chewing on vowel sounds while spinning odes to lost love, the resiliency of young hearts, and the pain of experience. Gray's work finds the universality at the heart of folk music and tweaks it just enough to make it relevant for alternative audiences.

After years of cult fandom and record-company woes, British singer-songwriter David Gray became a belated superstar last year in Ireland with a fourth, self-recorded album that's snowballing into an international hit. Unlike Beth Orton, who moved from William Orbit-fueled electronica to sleek modern folk, Gray's a traditional acoustic guy who now augments his stark tunes and Dylan-like bray with subtle, dance-inspired arrangements that have found an unlikely home on Dave Matthews' record label, ATO. "Please Forgive Me" floats on a live drummer's approximation of a skittering drum-and-bass beat, while "Babylon" layers frisky percussive samples and rippling synths over mellow guitars. Gray's hooks aren't gimmicky -- they're rooted in brooding melodies and straightforward poetry. The clincher is a nine-minute encore of Soft Cell's "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" that strips away the original's synth-pop cabaret to reveal a skeleton of dark, resigned drama. Here and elsewhere, Gray proves that great songs sometimes require quiet acts of irreverence.

David Gray's fan base is strong and active. They have seen him through his years with Virgin Records, during which time he was applauded for his talent, emotive voice, and songwriting skills yet never quite broke through to a mainstream audience. White Ladder showcases Gray like never before; it's an album of such depth and quality that one would be hard-pressed to ignore his talent. Each song is strong and superbly crafted, both in terms of arrangement and delivery. The standouts, "Please Forgive Me" and "This Year's Love," are touching and likely to bring a tear to the eye of the listener. This album is definitely a much-needed addition to any quality music collection. With any justice, it will finally bring David Gray the success that he so rightly deserves.
