From the Radio Times
There are no likeable characters in this Peter Nichols play. The middleaged, middle-class, happily married couple at its core are unchallenged and smug. The younger woman who makes a move on the husband could be defined as a psychopath, given that she is so devoid of moral responsibility. And the female family friend who breaks the news of the affair to the wife is sizzling in her seat with poorly concealed delight as she reveals exactly what she's discovered.
It is testament to Nichols's power as a writer that by the end of this drama the audience are left questioning their own honesty and culpability as much as they are the characters'.
