<pre class="nfo">The Saiyan Saga is the first saga in the second part of Dragon Ball (also known as Dragonball Z). The saga focuses on the struggles the heroes of Earth have with the Saiyans, a fictional race of extraterrestrials. The saga spans the first four volumes of the second part of Dragon Ball, ending in volume five.

A space capsule crashes to Earth. Its occupant, a long haired extraterrestrial, kills a farmer and has a brief encounter with Piccolo (Dragon Ball) He finds Son Goku at Kame House and introduces himself as Raditz, Goku's older brother and a member of the warrior alien race, the Saiyans. They are a race of aliens whose home planet, Vegeta, was wiped out by meteors many years ago. Only four remained, Goku and Raditz among them. Raditz demands that Goku join them, but Goku refuses; in retaliation, Raditz kidnaps Goku's four-year-old son, Son Gohan, in an attempt to coerce him.

Goku and Piccolo, former enemies now with a common goal, team up and take on Raditz. During the course of the battle, an emotional Gohan displays immense but uncontrolled power and manages to damage the overwhelmingly strong Raditz enough to offer an opening to Goku and Piccolo. Raditz is defeated, but Goku is killed in the process. Piccolo explains to a dying Raditz, that his friends on Earth will use the Dragon Balls to resurrect Goku. Raditz reveals that he has been broadcasting their conversation to the other two remaining Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa, both much stronger than he, who will arrive in about a year's time to take the Dragon Balls for themselves.

To prepare for the arrival of the Saiyans, Piccolo takes Goku's son, Gohan, under his wing with the goal of teaching him to harness his immense power. Goku is sent by Kami to train under Kaio in the afterlife until the Saiyans arrive. The remaining Z Fighters -- Kuririn, Yamucha, Tenshinhan, and Chaozu -- are trained by Kami. A year passes; the Z Fighters gather and Goku is resurrected with the Dragon Balls, but must still travel the one million kilometers of the Serpentine Road from Kaio's planet to meet Kami and return to Earth; subsequently, he arrives several hours late.

The Saiyans arrive on November 3, AD 762,[1] and meet the Z Fighters; they recognize Piccolo as a member of another alien species, the Namekians, and realize that another set of Dragon Balls must exist on the planet Namek. As the battle begins, Nappa plants six seeds from which sprout six Saibaimen to take on the Z Fighters. Yamucha is killed and an enraged Kuririn destroys all the Saibaimen in one fell swoop, but his attack has no effect on the Saiyans. In the ensuing battle against Nappa, Chaozu is killed in a suicidal gamble that does not pay off, and Tenshinhan dies trying to avenge his friend. Piccolo, once believed to be as purely evil as his forebear, sacrifices his own life to save Gohan's; as a result, Kami, with whom he is intrinsically linked, is also killed, and the Dragon Balls he created disappear. Shortly later, Goku finally arrives, mere moments before Nappa was to kill Gohan.

Goku was able to easily defeat Nappa, however when Vegeta orders Nappa to concede, Nappa attacks Kuririn and Gohan. In response Goku reveals a new technique, the Kaio-ken, and disables Nappa, who is then killed by Vegeta. Goku then fights Vegeta. Eventually, Vegeta transforms himself into an Oozaru. Gohan, Kuririn, and Yajirobe arrive to help Goku, and Yajirobe succeeds in cutting off Vegeta's tail; ending his transformation. Vegeta, still too strong for the badly beaten Goku seems to have won until Gohan transforms into an Oozaru. Gohan's rampage leaves Vegeta too badly injured to continue the battle.
