In an empty opera house, as Jerry dances, he is whisked away to a magical, wintery wonderland. But when Tom and a group of alley cats come and create mayhem by kidnapping the lovely music box ballerina, who has come to life, it is up to Jerry to save the day by rescuing her.

Nothing makes me sadder than the constant “reinventions” of various classic cartoon franchises. Whether it’s Baby Looney Tunes or Popeye and Son, these things are often only a shadow of their predecessors, possessing none of their charm and often, very little of what made the originals special. One such series that has had this misfortune over the past decades is the Tom and Jerry cartoons.

Revival after revival has attempted to, well, “neuter” the characters. What made Tom and Jerry great was the cartoon violence they inflicted upon one another, so when they got thrown into junk where they’re (gasp!) nice to one another it took everything out what made them special. The latest direct-to-video movie starring the cat and mouse duo is a bit of a return to the old ways, no small part in thanks to creator Joseph Barbera, who created the story shortly before his death.

Tom & Jerry: A Nutcracker Tale is, obviously, a Christmas-themed film. In it, the two are much closer to their original selves. Jerry is a ballet-loving mouse living in a theater, while Tom is an alleycat living with a pack of other tough-guy felines just outside. One night, for no real reason at all, a group of toys in the theater come to life, and take Jerry and his pal Tuffy to a magic kingdom where they dance. A lot. However, Tom and the cats invade the theater, transforming into the soldiers from the original Nutcracker ballet and cause havoc on Jerry and his new friends.
