Bittorrent has been requested to give a hand to Twitter in the process of deploying the latter’s files across its several servers efficiently.
“Murder” as the project has been labeled, is based on an open source. It would help Twitter as well as other developers for free.
Thousand of servers are required in the normal process of flow of updates that are sent to millions of users. Such big scale web-services are in need of the latest updates and that is for sure intensive time consumption.
So Twitter has made the first step in calling for help from BitTorrentto manage these huge files across their servers faster and more efficiently.
In the procedure, “Murder’s” purpose will be to save time and resources. Its function will be to transform Twitter’s servers into a large BitTorrent swarm that will distribute file update using the BitTorrent technology. Thus it will not use the bandwidth of Twitter users.
The setup is as simple aa the abc’s of torrent. Murder uses a ’seeder’ server where the new files will be distributed to thousands of ‘peer’ servers. Simple and serves the need!
Since all servers coordinate in the deployment of the files, it will only fractions of the time it would otherwise take when files are distributed from a central server. That’s the use of the server to server Bit Torrent technology.
Larry Gadea from Twitter has developed this ideology and the “Murder” project was then based on the BitTornado BitTorrent client, which was the first client to implement web-seeding. The code is also open to the public and licensed under the free software Apache License.
As says Eric Klinker, CEO of BitTorrent Inc. on the Twitter’s adoption of BitTorrent. “We are thrilled to collaborate with them on this and hope that more Web Monsters out there look to this and other applications of BitTorrent in solving some of the hard problems of the Internet.”
“The distributed nature of BitTorrent means an operation that once took many dozens of minutes, now happens in less than a dozen seconds. These efficiencies will reduce maintenance windows, site downtime and exposure to security vulnerabilities,” Klinker added.
More details on this “Murder” project will be divulged in the coming weeks from Twitter.
Till then we sit back and anticipate a major turn around of setting, what a merge!!

| | well I guess it is just one more step closer to letting google take over bit torrent...if you compromise a little you compromise all...might as well just let the internet giants take over in the open than by stealth |

| | thanks for the post sam. I see this as a Huge step for bittorrent and the torrent world having an internet giant like Twitter behind torents. Not any help for the copyrights but much help to prove the necessity of torrents in the cyber world today. |

Bit-Torrent in the mainstream now... maybe they will become alittle profitable and once you start earning the big money, the other criminals on Wall Street start looking out for ya... |
